Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus)

The Altes Rathaus or Old City Hall is a Medieval building that served as city hall until Salzburg's government moved to Schloss Mirabell, the Baroque palace on the other side of the River Salzach. The Altes Rathaus is still being used by the city's administration, the so-called Magistrat, and lets the former meeting rooms for special occasions. It can be found at the intersection of Alter Markt, Getreidegasse and Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse and is a popular sight due to its picturesque tower. It is noteworthy that the Altes Rathaus is a rather humble building compared to the city halls of other important trade centre from the same period. This is because ever since the peasant wars of the early 16th century, the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg did his very best to keep the power of the burghers as low as possible and made the mayor a mere ceremonial master.
