Salzburg Photos: Basilica of Pilgrimage Maria Plain
return to "summer
photos"
The hill of the Basilica Maria Plain was the site of worship ever since pagan times - probably due to the prominent position and the view on the Salzach River Valley. In the 17th century, relics were transferred here and a chapel was built. It became very popular with pilgrims from Salzburg, and in the 1690ies, the current Basilica of Maria Plain was built. Today, it is maintained by monks from the
Abbey of St. Peter in Salzburg and one of Austria′s most popular spiritual places.
