Salzburger Barockmuseum - Salzburg Baroque Museum
Since 1973, the Salzburg Baroque museum is located in the southern wing of the orangerie of Mirabell Castle. It is based on the private collection of Kurt and Else Rossacher, which they donated to the city and province of Salzburg to display it to the public.
The collection consists mostly of sketches for monumental artworks, and includes drawings and paintings by Rubens, Maffei, Bernini and Algardi, but also Cortona, the local hero Rottmayr, Altomonte, Troger, Tiepolo, the Guardis, Maulbertsch and Fragonard.
The Salzburg Baroque Museum prides itself for being the only museum in Europe dedicated entirely to sketches for proper art and calls it - slightly pompously - "the moment of birth" of the respective artworks. No matter if you buy that or not, it is definitely worth looking at the most impulsive, initial outline of artworks you might otherwise know only from their final stages.
