Salzburger Jazz-Herbst

The "Salzburger Jazz-Herbst" is an annual festival of Jazz music that is held in the city of Salzburg. It was founded in 1996 and takes place in late October and early November - thus during a "dead" time, after the summer season has ended and before the Christmas/skiing season starts. The Salzburger Jazz-Herbst is therefore also an attempt to fight half-empty hotels.

The Salzburger Jazz-Herbst comprises of a series of concerts, night sessions, galas, film screenings, lectures and exhibitions. It is thus multi-medial and depends on a range of venues - from small backroom stages to the city′s biggest concert hall. The latter one is the Großes Festspielhaus, but most events use much smaller venues: The Stiegl Brauwelt, the Romanesque basement of a bank at the Residenzplatz or the Oval at the Europark Shopping mall. Bigger concerts are held in the Salzburg Congress (convention centre), the Große Universitätsaula (congregation hall of the university) or the Großer Saal, the biggest concert hall of the Mozarteum art university.

Artists that have performed at the Salzburger Jazz-Herbst include Joe Zawinul, Sonny Rollins, Johnny Griffin, Dee Dee Bridgewater Oscar Klein, Sabina Hank, Adam Makowicz and the Vienna Art Orchestra. In selected events, the Jazz-Herbst also tries to produce "interdisciplinary" events, featuring artists of non-Jazzy genres such as Paco de Lucia, the Blind Boys of Alabama or Ray Charles.

As one can see from this list, the Salzburger Jazz-Herbst aims to attract big names and artists of international significance; it is thus an important supplement to the city′s more historic approach to music, which is otherwise very much biased towards baroque and classical music. The program of each year is published online; tickets for the concerts and other events of the Salzburger Jazz-Herbst can be obtained through the organisers, as well as ticket brokers. The latter option is likely to be more expensive.
