Weather in Salzburg in September
Right at the border between summer and autumn: Salzburg in September is a bit unpredictable. It can be hot and sunny like in summer, but if it rains, temperatures can drop significantly. Average maximum temperatures are still at 20 degrees Celsius, minimum ones decrease to 10 degrees. Expect six hours of sunshine per average day; days with rainfall decrease significantly to 10 in September. The month is ideal for hiking and mountain climbing, but also for sightseeing in Salzburg. Bring light clothing with a layer-option (ie. jacket and rain gear).
Things to see & do in Salzburg: September
September - the Salzburg Festival is over and the number of tourists in Salzburg finally decreases. The locals spend the weekends climbing the odd mountain and if you are lucky, it is still warm enough for a final swim in a lake. Generally, September is a quiet month in Salzburg; the new season in the theatres and concert halls starts. Museums usually open new temporary exhibitions. And the odd crop festival might take place.

September is the perfect month for outdoor activities, especially if they concern climbing a mountain. There are few festivals and events, but many town museums and cultural societies gear up for the new season / academic year. September is nice for countryside retreats, especially for hiking around a picturesque lake. Otherwise, small events might be scheduled depending on the region where you travel in the province of Salzburg or the Salzkammergut. Check with the local tourist information centre for details.
